Android 16 Beta 1 Arrives on Google Pixel Devices: Here’s What’s New

In Short

  • Android 16 Beta 1 addresses issues with unoptimized apps on large screens, forcing developers to make them resizable.

  • Live updates become a native feature, showing ongoing task progress in the status bar.

  • It also introduces support for Samsung’s Advanced Protection Video (APV) codec.

It feels like Android 15 just launched a few months ago—because it did, back in October 2024. Fast forward to today, and we’re already getting our hands on the first beta of Android 16. With two developer previews already behind us, this public beta promises some exciting new features. Let’s dive into what Android 16 Beta 1 brings to the table.

What’s New in Android 16 Beta 1?

Optimized Apps for Large Screens

Android 16 tackles a long-standing issue with apps on tablets and foldables. Many apps have historically been unoptimized for large screens, restricted to portrait orientation, and appearing awkward. Android 16 Beta 1 forces developers to make apps resizable, ensuring a better user experience on larger devices. Developers no longer have the option to opt out, signaling that Google is finally prioritizing tablets and foldables. (Exclusions apply to games.)

Live Updates

Live updates are now a native feature in Android 16. This addition allows for real-time task progress to be displayed in notifications and the status bar. Whether it’s food deliveries, timers, or navigation, Android 16’s live updates provide third-party support to features previously seen on Samsung and OnePlus devices, comparable to iOS’s implementation.

Wider Support for Predictive Back Gesture

Initially introduced in Android 15, the predictive back gesture now works with third-party apps in Android 16 Beta 1. Any app targeting Android 16 or higher must include predictive back animations. For users navigating with three-button controls, this feature improves the overall experience with smoother back animations.

Support for Samsung’s Advanced Protection Video (APV) Codec

Android 16 Beta 1 introduces support for Samsung’s APV codec, designed for professional-grade, lossless video production. It supports the APV 422-10 Profile, featuring YUV 422 color sampling, 10-bit encoding, and up to 2Gbps bitrates. This means your smartphone could become a powerful tool for creating industry-standard videos ready for post-production.
